Article by Francesco PalazzoThe news of the first ever Juventus-Barcelona match will not be a surprise to anyone.
After all, the two clubs, who have the same president, Giuseppe Marotta and a long history of success in La Liga, had not played each other in a friendly since 2002, when Barcelona lost 2-0 to Juventus in a World Cup qualifier in Turin.
It is a fixture that will be remembered by both clubs, but only Juventus will be able to claim victory.
Barcelona won 2-1 in their opening game of the campaign on Thursday, while Juventus have a match on Friday at home against Levante, where they have yet to score.
It’s a match that both sides are eager to take part in, even though the Champions League tie against Barca has not been played in three years.
It will be an important game for both teams, as it will be the first time that they have played in the Champions Trophy, which is played every four years.
There will be plenty of quality to watch, but Juventus are already looking ahead to Saturday’s Champions League match against Barcelona, as they prepare to start the season on the back foot.
“We’re here to play against Barcelona,” the Juventus coach, Andrea Marotta, said.
“I can assure you that if we lose it, the fans are going to lose it.
We are not playing as we want to, as we know that we can’t win a game, but we have to make sure we don’t play badly.
We have to concentrate on winning games.
It’s not about playing bad, but playing to win.”
It’s the first Champions League game, and we have a great opportunity to prove our quality and to win it.
“The first match will be a huge test for us.
We’ll see what happens tomorrow.”
A tough encounterThe atmosphere at the San Siro on Saturday is expected to be similar to that of the opening leg of the Champions Cup final in March, which was won by Juventus by two goals in extra time, and which also saw Juventus score four times.
Barça, on the other hand, are looking to build on their success in the previous match, winning 4-1 on aggregate to the Bianconeri.
The Bianconero side have won the last two games against Juventus, with only two draws.
Juventus have a better goal difference than Barca, however, with their best goal difference being a 0.8-goal advantage, while the Catalans have the highest goal difference.
Juve’s next game will be against Levantus on Saturday, and the Biancos have a game in hand.
“This is going to be a big test for Barca,” Marotta said.
“They have a lot of players who are going against Juventus in the final, and if we don, they will win it, but if we win, we will be in the semifinals.”
If we lose, the players are going in tears.
I have no doubts about it.
We’ve had a great year, and I know the players will play with their heart.
We know they’re in a very difficult situation, and that is the only thing we want.
We are all motivated to try and reach the final.
We will not play badly, but it’s not going to happen, so we’ll concentrate on what we have.
We want to win the final.
